Portuguese NIF for foreigners
We obtain your Portuguese tax number (NIF) and your Portal das Finanças password, with or without a fiscal representative, with no trip to Portugal.
The NIF is the first document any foreigner needs in Portugal: to rent a home, open a bank account, sign an employment or phone contract, or buy property. We request it from the Tax Authority by power of attorney, for residents and for people who are still abroad.

How it works
- Send us your documentsA valid passport and a proof of address in your name (in your home country or in Portugal).
- Sign the power of attorneyWe prepare the power of attorney and the representation form. You sign remotely and send it back scanned.
- We apply for the NIFWe submit the application to the Tax Office. The NIF is usually issued the same day or within a few days.
- You receive the certificateWe send you the NIF document and, if you wish, request your Portal das Finanças password.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a fiscal representative?
Residents outside the EU and the EEA need a fiscal representative to obtain a NIF. EU/EEA residents can apply without one, but may appoint one to receive Tax Office correspondence.
What proof of address is accepted?
A recent document in your name showing your full address: a utility bill, bank statement, lease, residence certificate or an official document from your country. An address printed in the passport is accepted in some cases.
How long does it take?
With complete documents, the NIF is usually issued between the same day and a few working days. The Portal das Finanças password is sent by post and takes longer.
